Hearth: nm (word coming from the popular Latin astracum, from the Greek ostrakon “shell”, then “piece of brick”).
The hearth is the paved part of the fireplace where the fire is made, and by extension the fireplace itself (hearth).
Quote from the French writer Gustave Flaubert (1821-1880): “She buried the log under the ashes and fell asleep in front of the hearth” (Flaubert).
