The earliest traces of the law of retaliation were found in the Code of Hammurabi, a collection of laws of the king of Babylon who reigned between 1792 and 1750 BC. AD: “If someone has punctured the eye of a free man, his eye will be punctured; if someone has broken a tooth of a free man, a tooth will be broken… ”
We also find this formula in the Old Testament: in the books of Exodus and Leviticus.
Nowadays, the law of retaliation is fortunately no longer applied, but replaced by graduated penalties, awarded according to the damage suffered by the victim.
