Alfalfa: Cultivated alfalfa is a forage herbaceous plant (Fabaceae family - Botanical name: Medicago sativa) with purple flowers, cultivated for its forage qualities, capable of fixing nitrogen in poor soils.
It is also called great clover, or Burgundy hay or alfalfa.
Its etymology comes from the modern Provencal "luzerno" meaning, glowworm, from the Latin lucerna, lamp, because the seeds of alfalfa are brilliant.
