Canole: A canole is a small dry, golden and twisted cake, a specialty of Rochechouart (Haute-Vienne), and whose creation dates back to 1371. During the Hundred Years War (*), the besieged inhabitants were delivered by Bertrand du Guesclin (**) and plundered the English camp; they found there wheat and fresh eggs, with which they prepared these little cakes, to which they gave the name of the captain of the enemy troops, Sir Robert Canopes (or Knolles).
