Sulfuric acid: Sulfuric acid, formerly called oil of vitriol or fuming vitriol, is a chemical compound with the formula H2SO4. It is a mineral acid whose strength (pKa = -3,0) is exceeded only by a few superacids. It is miscible with water in all proportions, where it dissociates releasing hydronium cations:
2 H2O + H2SO4 → 2 H3O + (aq) + SO42- (aq).
