Affirm: v.tr. (word from the Latin affirmare).
The verb “affirm” has several meanings:
1. Give (a thing) as true, state (a judgment) as true (assure, advance, certify, declare, guarantee, claim, support).
Quote from the French writer François Mauriac (1885-1970): “As long as we have not seen with our eyes, we have no right to affirm anything”.
I affirm it on my honor (swear).
I claim he is lying.
I say no.
I claim to have met him that day....
