Hidden: adj. A masked wine is a wine which hides behind... a mask, an excessive oakiness for example, a flashy wine which does not seem natural, not authentic. It is often “masked” by certain oenological techniques.
Another possible interpretation: a bottle during a tasting is said to be “masked” when the deposit partly hides the walls.
