Coat: v.tr. "To coat" is to cover (a surface) with a more or less soft material that permeates it.
In the kitchen, poultry is coated with butter to roast it.
In pastry, a biscuit is coated with a layer of melted chocolate using a brush, in order to prevent the biscuit from breaking when it is soaked in syrup.
