Lagoon: nm (word coming from the Italian lagoon “big lake”, augmentative of lago “lake”).
The word “lagoon” has several meanings:
1. Small seawater lake, shallow lagoon between land and a coral reef, through the breaches of which the tide enters.
Quote from the French writer Jean-Marie Le Clézio (1940): “The tide goes down, bares the coral plateaus in the lagoon”.
