The adjective “compulsory” has several meanings:
1. Who has the force to oblige, who has a character of obligation (deontic).
Education free and compulsory.
It is mandatory to pass a medical examination.
2. Familiar: Inevitable, necessary (forced, obliged).
He failed his exam, it was mandatory!
Opposites of obligatory: optional, free, voluntary, fortuitous....
