Carbohydrate: Carbohydrates were historically called carbohydrates (or carbs) because their chemical formula was considered to be based on the Cn(H2O)p model. At present, the definition has evolved and the term "carbide hydrate (or carbohydrate)" is completely obsolete in French but not in English where the term "carbohydrate" is widely used.
