Calcium phosphates: Calcium phosphates are whitish solids in their pure state, they make up the mineral part of bones and teeth. Calcium phosphate is also found in blood plasma and cytoplasm.
Their formulas are:
- tricalcium phosphate: Ca3(PO4);
- apatite: Ca5(Mg,Fe2+)(PO4)3(OH), more abundant in bones and teeth;
- whitlockite: Ca9(Mg,Fe2+)(PO4)6(PO3OH).
The enzyme catalyzing its attachment to bone is alkaline phosphatase.
