The word “idle” has several meanings:
1. Who, temporarily or permanently, is unemployed, does not exercise a profession (idle, inactive, unemployed).
Remain idle (colloquial: laze around, hang out; comb the giraffe).
– Quote from the Genevan writer and philosopher Jean-Jacques Rousseau (1712-1778): “Every idle citizen is a knave”.
By extension: Lead an idle life.
Adverb: idly.
