Toast (carry a) : In old French, the "toste" meant a slice of toast that was soaked in wine. Around 1700, it was said that one "toasted a lady" when one drank to her health, in her honor.
By extension, the expression "to wear a toste" has applied to both men and women.
Nowadays, the expression "to raise a toast (*)" has become the action (or the fact of raising a glass) or speech by which one proposes to drink in honor of someone or some thing or drinking to someone's health, to the fulfillment of a wish, etc.
(*) Toast: the word “toast” is therefore a false Anglicism since it comes from Old French.
