Rite : nm (word coming from rit “use, custom”, from the Latin ritual).
Note: the spelling “rit” is still used in liturgy.
The word “rite” has many meanings:
1. Set of worship ceremonies in use in a religious community; organization traditional of these ceremonies (worship, liturgy).
Catholic, Western, Eastern rites.
Protestant rituals.
Catholic liturgy: Degree of solemnity of a Party.
Single, double ritual.
2. Ceremony regulated or particular gesture prescribed by the liturgy of a Religion (ceremony, practice, ritual).
Public rites (exoteric), secrets (esoteric).
Initiation rituals.
Funeral rituals.
Rites magic (magic).
By analogy: The rites of a secret society, the Masonic rites.
Sociology: Regulated practices of a sacred or symbolic nature.
Rites of passage, initiations.
3. Figurative meaning: Regulated, invariable practice; usual way of doing things.
Custom, habit.
The rituals of politeness.
It has become a ritual.
An unchanging ritual.
