Schist: nm While shale is topical through gas* (which can constitute a gas reservoir rock), it is also intimately linked to vines and wine. Shale is one of the most common and oldest sedimentary rocks on earth, a brown or green, sometimes red, flaky-looking rock. It is a fine-grained rock, composed mostly of flakes of clay and tiny fragments of other minerals, all flaky from the compression of the clay at the core.
