Rootstock: nm Grafting is a technique of assembling two vine branches that has been practiced since the Middle Ages. There was also the technique of provignage (the vines were reproduced by layering old stocks). But it is the phylloxera crisis after the destruction of the vineyard that will generalize it. Thus, almost all French (and European) vines after 1880 will be grafted onto American rootstocks alone capable of resisting this terrible aphid...
