Sodium metabisulphite: Sodium metabisulphite or sodium pyrosulphite is a yellowish disinfectant, antioxidant and food preservative.
The IUPAC calls the S2O52- ion the disulfite ion. It should not be confused with the bisulfite ion HSO3- which is the old name for hydrogen sulfite.
Preparation: Sodium metabisulphite can be prepared by evaporating a solution of sodium bisulphite saturated with sulfur dioxide: 2 HSO3-⇌ H2O + S2O52- which leaves Na2S2O5 solid.
