Like monoterpenes, a sesquiterpene molecule can be acyclic or contain one to two rings (like cadinene); many combinations are possible. Derivatives of sesquiterpenes obtained by biochemistry or synthesis (oxidation or rearrangement) are called sesquiterpenoids.
