Peat: nf Peat is fossil organic matter formed by the accumulation over long periods of time of dead organic matter, mainly plants, in an environment saturated with water, but sheltered from the air.
Peat forms the majority of peatland soils. When dried, it gives a brown to blackish fuel which heats less than wood and charcoal.
It is used as fuel, manure or as a filter for whiskey (single malt).
