Antibiotic: An antibiotic (from the Greek anti: "against", and bios: "life") is a natural or synthetic substance that destroys or blocks the growth of bacteria. In the first case, we speak of a bactericidal antibiotic and in the second case of a bacteriostatic antibiotic. When the substance is used externally to kill the bacteria by contact, it is not called an antibiotic but an antiseptic.
