History of the kiwifruit: The cultivars of the kiwifruit Actinidia deliciosa and Actinidia chinensis are both native to south-eastern China, in the Yangzi Jiang valley. It was first described around 1750 by Chéron d'Incarville, a French Jesuit. The "yangtao", literally "Yang Peach", or "mihoutao", "monkey fishing", grew in the wild in the forest along the river but was not cultivated, it was simply picked by the Chinese who appreciated it.
