Kalamata (olive) : The city of Kalamata is located in the south of the Peloponnese in Greece, in the regional district of Messinia of which it is the capital (See Map below).
It is renowned for the quality of its black olives (in phonetic Greek: mávri eliá).
Between Mount Taygetos and the sea, olive groves stretch as far as the eye can see. The entire region (second largest producer in the country after Crete) lives only by and forolive. It is this fruit which founded the wealth of the port which formerly traded with the whole world.
The Kalamata terroir is unique, it produces two varieties of olives. The table one, almost pointed – called “kalamon” – which is preserved in a mixture brine bywater vinegar et salt, or even better, in olive oil. And the “koronéiki”, a little smaller, which give the famous olive oil extra virgin.
The region has more than 40 million trees and produces 45 tons of oil. Now there is a label AOP (protected designation of origin) for Kalamata and its region.
