Japanese melon Yubari King : The melon Japanese Yubari King is cgrown on the island of Okkaido in northern Japan. Those are the fruits the most expensive in the world. They are considered luxury products, and their sales prices can sometimes reach exorbitant sums.
The King Yubari melon is a cultivar cantaloupe produced in greenhouses in Yubari, Hokkaido, a small town near Sapporo. The King Yubari melon is a hybrid of two cantaloupe cultivars and the Favorites Earl and Burpee “Spicy” Cantaloupe. Its scientific name is Cucumis melo L. (var. reticulatus Naud. cv. Yubari King).
The King Yubari melon should be perfectly round and should have exceptionally smooth skin. Part of the stem, which is cut with scissors, is left on top for decoration. In 2008, at an auction in Japan, two King Yubari melons were sold together for ¥2,500,000 or approximately 26.000 euros.
Japanese people give each other pairs of King Yubari melons as gifts during the Chūgen festival which takes place on July 15 and which celebrates the spirits of ancestors.
