Khao lam (Laotian cuisine): Khao lam is sticky rice sweetened with coconut milk cooked in a hollowed-out bamboo trunk originating from Laos.
The rice (white or black) is cooked in the bamboo directly over the flame. Bamboo does not burn because of the water it contains.
The rice is then stored in the bamboo where it was cooked.
To taste the khao lam, the bamboo is peeled like a banana, and the rice is taken by hand....
