Second breakfast : The second breakfast is a meal taken after Breakfast, but before breakfast.
In some other languages: German: zweites Frühstück, Polish: drugie śniadanie, Slovak: desiata, Spanish: almuerzo, Hungarian: tízórai.
It’s a meal traditional en Bavaria, Poland, Slovakia, Spain et Hungary. In Bavaria and Poland, spot special are made exclusively to be consumed during the second breakfast. AT Vienna and in most other parts of Austria the second breakfast is called Jause.
In other Spanish-speaking countries, almuerzo means breakfast, but in Spain, it's a second Breakfast. He is typical to eat four to five meals a day in these places.
Details: The second breakfast is usually a meal more light and or an collation consumed around 10:00 am (its Hungarian and Slovak names, tízórai and desiata respectively, actually mean "[snack] at 10"). It consists of coffee and pâtisseries or sausages. The typical sausage is a white sausage (Weißwurst), which is considered the specialty of Munich and Bavaria in general. The sausage is prepared early in the morning to be served with the second breakfast. It is served with pretzels, mild german mustard and beer de wheat. The concept of the meal is roughly similar to that of the British elevenses. In Poland, the second breakfast usually consists of snacks such as sandwiches to pâtisseries, but may consist of dishes slight Type dessert such as pudding au chocolate or kissel.
The first and second breakfasts are also a common custom in agricultural regions of North America. Farmers who need to get up early to take care of with animals or perform other tasks may have a small 'first breakfast', such as toast and coffee, just after getting up, followed by a second more breakfast copious after the first set of tasks.
The second breakfast in literature and cinema:
- In JRR Tolkien's novel The Hobbit, protagonist Bilbo Baggins eats a second breakfast, and in the preface to his sequel, The Lord of the Rings, Tolkien mentions that Hobbits prefer to eat six meals a day. In Peter Jackson's film adaptation of The Fellowship of the Ring, as Aragorn leads the hobbits on the march, Pippin - hoping for a meal break - is horrified when Merry tells him the man doesn't know. probably not for the second breakfast. Pippin goes on to ask if he knows of other meals commonly eaten by Hobbits, including elevenses, breakfast, afternoon tea, lunch, and supper. Aragorn throws an apple at each of them to accompany them until their next “regular” lunch break. However, in the book, the Hobbits are specifically described as eating "six meals a day (when they [can] have any)", not seven.
- In the books of Thomas Mann, The Magic Mountain and Buddenbrooks, frequent and detailed references are made to second breakfasts. Sometimes the first breakfast food reappears, such as oatmeal and fruit. In fact, in Magic Mountain, Mann even refers to “third breakfasts”.
The "second breakfast" is referenced in the American version of The Office, in the season 6 episode "The Delivery", by Kevin Malone:
“Pam and I are hungry at the same times so we ate a lot together. Not all meals. Just a second breakfast, a lunch, a second lunch and a first dinner. "
