Sangiovese: Sangiovese is the main Italian black grape variety. It dominates Chianti and much of central Italy. It is the most widespread grape variety in Italy (about 10% of the vineyard). It is called brunello in southern Tuscany. (DOCG Brunello di Montalcino, Vino Nobile di Montepulciano), calabrese in Calabria and prunello in other regions.
Its name comes from Sangue (blood) and Giove (Jupiter) and therefore means blood of Jupiter. It gives fruity, colored and slightly acidic wines.
