In vino veritas: In vino veritas is a Latin phrase which means: “In wine, the truth”. It is found in Pliny the Elder.
The Greek expression Ἐν οἴνῳ ἀλήθεια: En oino aletheia, of the same meaning, is attributed to the poet Alcaeus. It is in the work of this one that we would find the oldest known reference of this maxim taken up in particular by the Greek Athénée de Naucratis in Les Sages seated.
