Falerne: Falerne was a famous Campania wine during antiquity, produced in the province of Caserta.
The great wine of antiquity: This wine was praised by Horace (*) and decried by Pliny (**): "After the wine of Setia, the most esteemed in the time of Augustus was that of Falerne, especially the falerne of canton called Faustien, which had acquired this high degree of goodness by culture; but at present it is bastardized, says Pliny, because one aims rather at quantity than at quality”.
