The word "caterpillar" has several meanings:
I) Phytophagous larva of Coleoptera and Lepidoptera, with an elongated smooth or hairy body, possessing sericogenic glands (which make silk) and ten pairs of legs.
In the fall, the caterpillars weave a cocoon of silk where they lock themselves up and undergo transformations (nymph, chrysalis) before emerging as adults (butterfly).
