Barbarossa: The Barbarossa grape is a Corsican black grape variety. The origin of Barbarossa is probably Provençal. It is also called Greek rose or barbarous. This variety lets its buds open early. With a more or less upright habit, the very prolific plant displays moderately satisfactory vigour.
Good quality wines can be expected from this variety which likes the comfort of warm and fertile soils. Mature in the third early period, the Barbarossa produces fairly compact, cylindrical-conical clusters of large size. A whitish bloom covers the skin of the pink-skinned fruits that they group together.
The pulp of these spherical berries is fleshy. Appreciated as table grapes when fully ripe, the berries are vinified in white which can be recognized by its amber nuances. Low in acid and light in structure, this wine is moderately aromatic. Endangered, this variety is found quite familiarly on the pergolas of farm buildings in the South of France.
