The genus Sphagnum gathers from 1 to 510 species in the world, which form peatlands covering about 3% of the emerged lands (humid habitats located in circum-polar zone for the most part and "sphagnum peat bogs" dispersed in mountain or on leached and acidified substrates elsewhere).
