The word “strain” has several meanings:
1. What remains of the trunk, with the roots, when the tree was cut down.
Uprooting (grubbing up), burning old stumps.
Phrase: To remain (planted) like a stump, inert, motionless.
Sleep like a stump, deeply (log).
Base of the plant (roots and associated organs): basal part underground, or located just at ground level, of the stem of living plants...
