Truffle: The truffle is the vernacular name given to the edible fruiting of an ectomycorrhizal ascomycete fungus which occurs in a more or less globular form. The fungus can produce several truffles. Certain truffles have been particularly appreciated by gourmets since Antiquity (*), and most species of truffles are in great demand, but the name of truffle is also given to species which have little flavor.
