Raffles Hotel - Singapore : At the beginning of August 2019, the Raffles hotel, the most emblematic of Singapore reopens after two years of renovation work. From Rudyard Kipling, William Sommerset Maughan, Charlie Chaplin and Elizabeth Taylor to William and Kate to the actors of Crazy Rich Asians, they have all experienced Singapore's most iconic hotel. Originally opened in 1887, on what was then a beachfront property (today, after decades of land reclamation work, in the heart of downtown), Raffles Singapore is not just a historic symbol of the city, but also the flagship of Raffles hotels around the world.
For many years it has also been one of the most cutting edge hotels on the market. It was the first in Singapore to have electric lights, for example, and the first to have French chefs and to offer butler service. So when he started to feel a little tired, the owner and the group decided to close the hotel for almost two years for a complete overhaul of everything from the suites to the restaurant concept to the tenants (shops , aesthetic center…). On Thursday August 1, 2019, what went on behind the scaffolding was finally revealed, much to Singaporeans and longtime guests alike.
Due to the building's status as a national monument, the team responsible for the renovation work - the famous international design studio Champalimaud and the international architecture and design firm Aedas - had to respect the limits imposed by the preservation. But that did not prevent the project from being extremely meticulous: the floorboards were removed, restored and soundproofed; the ballroom was enlarged and modernized; the lobby has been reinvented (and topped with spectacular chandeliers); and all 115 suites have been redesigned to be brighter, fresher and reflect a more modern Asian sensibility. Outstanding facilities include a bespoke safe-style mini bar with free snacks, bespoke bath products from the London perfume house Ormond Jayne and the really efficient iPad technology.
The butler program has also been extended: it is now the dedicated butler for each room who now serves as the point of contact for everything relating to the guest, from check-in to check-out of the suite and creation. personalized routes to serve a teapot on the teak verandas that run alongside all the suites.
Another distinguishing feature of Raffles Singapore is that it has managed to remain an idyllic urban resort - complete with swimming pool, tropical gardens, and a whole block of square grounds - despite the growth of the skyscrapers surrounding it. Like a seaside resort, it offers many on-site attractions. There's a new seven-room spa, pétanque lawn, and upgraded tea time served in the Lobby Lounge.
The 10 dining options include a new Long Bar (the original was the birthplace of the Singapore Sling cocktail over a century ago), the Writers Bar for literary-inspired cocktails, and exclusive restaurants by celebrity chefs. Alain Ducasse, Anne-Sophie Pic (who makes his Asian debut with the impeccable La Dame de Pic) and Jereme Leung (who returns to Singapore after his international success.) And large retail (who came up with a new Mediterranean concept for the hotel). Anne-Sophie Pic Arcade now offers a selection of brands carefully selected by the hotel to reflect its philosophy (names like Rimowa, Minotti and Leica), as well as unexpected tenants like a high-end collaborative workspace, a true reflection of Singapore's Singapore. today.
