Andreas Sigismund Marggraf
Marggraf (Andreas Sigismond): Andreas Sigismond Marggraf is a German chemist (Berlin 1709 - idem 1782). He discovered, in 1747, that the root of the fodder beet (ancestor the sugar beet) contained a white, crystallizable material with a sweet flavor. He thought that this substance could replace that produced by sugar cane, but he found no practical application to its discovery.
